Why a place and not a language code

The name of a language hides a question: which one, spoken where? Two cities can share a language on paper and still carry different words, different accents, different small talk — close enough to confuse a textbook, different enough to matter in a real conversation. That's as true of a minority language with a handful of valleys between dialects as it is of one spoken on two continents. Every cat is tied to one place, and the instruction to stay in that variety goes out with every message.
